Gaia Sun: An Artist’s Journey of Nature, Community, and Creation

“My art is made with earth's natural paints; it's an art collaboration between human and nature. And my journey doing this is continuously evolving.”

Gaia Sun’s art profoundly explores the connection between humanity and the natural world. Using pigments sourced from plants, roots, and organic materials, her work embodies the essence of nature’s beauty and unpredictability. Gaia’s unique approach to art is not just about the materials she uses but also about the meditative and intentional process behind each piece. Her story is one of passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

A Unique Artistic Journey

Gaia’s journey into art began with an unexpected spark during a psychology class where she learned about Rorschach tests.

“The moment I created that first Rorschach with my cousin, it was like a light bulb switched on.”

Fascinated by the patterns and images that emerged from inkblots, she began experimenting with colors and materials. This exploration led her to leave her home, live in a van, and sell her art on the beaches of San Diego

Since leaving home, she has changed her name to Gaia, symbolizing Mother Earth. Her name reflects her deep respect for the earth and its natural elements, which are central to her artistic practice.

The Creative Process: A Meditative Collaboration with Nature

Gaia Sun’s creative process is as intuitive as it is experimental. She begins by setting an intentional space, speaking affirmations to her canvas—an act she believes influences the pigments on a vibrational level.

“I believe that the vibrations of my words connect with the water and pigments, shaping the patterns in my work.”

Gaia’s choice of materials sets her apart in the art world. She uses a variety of natural pigments, including turmeric, beetroot, matcha, cacao, cayenne, star anise, blue and green spirulina, and mica powder, which gives a golden, dust-like finish. Each pigment reacts differently when applied to the canvas. For example, hibiscus turns from pink to indigo as it dries, adding an element of surprise to her work. Gaia’s process involves continuous experimentation and trial and error.

“Being patient is key. I’ve had pigments that didn’t stick to the canvas, like arrowroot powder, which just fell off."

Her willingness to embrace and learn from these challenges has refined her technique.

Gaia’s pigments are prepared by adding boiling water and left to sit for hours or even days to achieve the right depth of color. She then pours them onto the canvas, guiding the movement with her hands in a process reminiscent of watercolor painting. Each layer dries for at least 24 hours before she applies another, making patience an essential part of her art.

“I have no idea what the final piece will look like until it’s dry, but I trust the process."

This unpredictability is at the heart of her work’s allure.

Turmeric, one of her favorite pigments, creates striking fractal formations as it dries. Her method relies on allowing the materials to interact freely, forming their own organic textures. While she doesn’t detail the exact extraction process, it typically involves heating or boiling the materials to release their pigments, resulting in a concentrated liquid that she applies to her canvases.

For Gaia, art is a collaboration with nature. She embraces the spontaneous transformations that occur as the pigments settle, reinforcing her belief in surrendering to the process. Looking ahead, she plans to incorporate clay into her work, adding new dimensions of texture. Her deep connection to the earth, symbolized by her chosen name, Gaia, underscores the philosophy behind her practice—one that merges patience, trust, and the raw beauty of natural elements.

Challenges and Community Support

Living in a van brought its own set of challenges, particularly finding space to create, admitting that the hardest part is not giving up. Despite the lack of a stable workspace, she found solace in her community

“Asking for help doesn’t make me incapable; it helps me grow."

Her friends and fellow artists provided spaces where she could continue her work, proving that community support is essential in the artistic journey. Gaia’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of a supportive network.

Inspiration

Frida Kahlo is more than just an artistic influence for Gaia Sun—she is, in Gaia’s words, “everything.” Kahlo’s resilience, her ability to create through pain, deeply resonates with Gaia, shaping not just her artistic perspective but also her creative process. Like Kahlo, Gaia approaches her art as an intimate collaboration with life itself, embracing both control and surrender.

Just as Kahlo used personal symbolism and vibrant colors to express her inner world, Gaia harnesses the raw beauty of nature—turmeric’s golden hues, the deep browns of coffee, the rich stains of wine—to weave a visual language rooted in emotion and organic transformation. Her process, which involves speaking affirmations to her pigments and trusting their unpredictable flow, mirrors Kahlo’s ability to channel personal experience into deeply evocative work. Though Gaia doesn’t imitate Kahlo’s aesthetic, she carries forward her spirit: a fearless commitment to artistic truth, patience, and the belief that beauty often emerges from struggle.

Memorable Pieces and Artistic Impact

One of Gaia’s most memorable pieces is the “Water Buffalo,” created using only matcha and cacao.

“When I took it to get framed, the artist there turned it a different way and pointed out a water buffalo shape that I hadn’t noticed before."

This piece, like many of her works, reveals new details upon closer inspection, making each viewing a unique experience. Gaia’s art encourages viewers to find their own connections and interpretations, much like a Rorschach test.

Future Goals and Artistic Message

Gaia envisions a future where her work is exhibited in galleries and collected by art enthusiasts. She expresses her desire for people to see the value in her artwork, and for them to connect deeply with it. She also enjoys creating commissioned pieces, allowing her to connect with clients personally. Gaia’s upcoming projects include a new collection with brighter tones, cosmic themes, and textured elements using clay. She is committed to sharing her art on social media, recognizing its potential to reach a wider audience.

Gaia’s message to her audience is clear: her art is an expression of love, intention, and a deep bond with nature.

“I create from the heart, and each piece carries so much care and meaning."
